PGA Fantasy: Monkey Knife Fight Picks for Charles Schwab Challenge

Following Phil Mickelson’s historical win at the Ocean Course, next up on the PGA calendar is the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club (par 70, 7,209 yards) in Fort Worth, Texas. Colonial is one of the longest tenured PGA courses, as the only host of this event since it was added to annual schedule 75 years ago. Monkey Knife Fight is offering some great contests for this year’s Charles Schwab and below I break down some of my favorite picks for their featured contests of the week.

Monkey Knife Fight PGA Picks | Charles Schwab Challenge

More or Less – Pick More/Less For Each Player | Prize: 2.5x

For this Monkey Knife Fight contest, we have two golfers and just like with a prop, we have to choose if each player will score over or under their fantasy point line. Get both correct, and receive a 2.5x return on our buy in. It is important to note that Monkey Knife Fight’s fantasy golf scoring system is different compared to other DFS sites. No points are reward for finishing position or streaks, nor do players lose points for bogeys. Their scoring system is simple:

Per Hole:

Eagle or Better: 5

Birdie: 3

Par: 1

Collin Morikawa: More than 96.5 fantasy points

Daniel Berger: Less than 96.5 fantasy points

Last year’s Charles Schwab marked the return of PGA golf, after the season was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That week, fans were blessed with an epic event that came down to a playoff between Morikawa and Berger. Unfortunately for Morikawa, he missed a short par putt on the first hole of the playoff, giving Berger the win. This season, both players have been very successful, each with five Top-10 finishes, but Morikawa comes in with the better form. Last week at the PGA Championship, he carded an eighth place finish, while Berger barely made the cut and struggled mightily on the weekend, finishing 75th out of 81 players.

Colonial is a perfect example of a second shot course, and Morikawa has been absolutely brilliant as a ball striker over his last two starts, ranking first in strokes gained tee-to-green and second in strokes gained on approach. Also, his best results as a putter have come on Bentgrass, which is the type of putting surface he will see this week in Fort Worth. Moriakwa is in a prime position to contend for a win this week, while I think we see Berger struggle in his title defense. His performance this past week at the Ocean Course was very discouraging and Begrer’s form heading into the Charles Schwab this time around is a large downgrade from last season, when he headed to Colonial fresh off three straight top-ten finishes. Berger failed to gain strokes tee-to-green last week for the fourth time in his last eight starts, and I think taking the under on his Monkey Knife Fight fantasy line is the right move.

More or Less – Pick More/Less For Each Player | Prize: 2.5x

Opposed to fantasy points, this contest is solely about the amount of birdies each golfer will convert this week. Get both correct, and profit 2.5x your buy-in.

Jordan Spieth: More than 16.5 birdies

Justin Thomas: More than 16.5 birdies

These two good friends are the top two favorites to win the Charles Schwab this Sunday, with Spieth and Thomas sporting +1000 and +1200 odds, respectively. First off for Spieth, the three-time major winner is from Dallas and he has found great success at Colonial over his career. The short pitch and putt setup of this venue is perfect for his game, and Spieth’s course resume in Fort Worth reads an incredible six top-10s in eight career starts. This equates to 9.5th place average for finish for the Texas native, and no player in this week’s field has more career birdies than Spieth at Colonial. With three top-10s in his last four starts, I am not thinking twice about this and locking Spieth in for more than 16.5 birdies.

Thomas on the other hand brings less convincing current form after a missed cut at the Ocean Course last week. But, he did post a 10th place finish at Colonial in his debut at the Texas venue a year ago, and Thomas did produce 17 birdies per start across his previous five before the mishap at the PGA Championship. For the season, the 2021 PLAYERS champion ranks first in total birdies and first in birdie or better percentage. Last, but certainly not least, Thomas is one of the top Bentgrass players in the world. When we put all these player’s last 50 rounds on this specific type of green side by side, Thomas ranks first in total strokes gained by a wide margin. Expect him to bounce back in a big way this weekend, and Thomas and Spieth should both be in the mix come Sunday afternoon.
