MLB Pick’em Predictions for PrizePicks MLB | Aug. 15

Yusei Kikuchi O/U 6.5 Strikeouts

Yusei Kikuchi finds his way at the top of the PrizePicks entry with a difficult matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies, who had the day off yesterday. Kikuchi has stayed under this total in his last two games even though he went six-plus innings in both starts.

The leash for Kikuchi could be short tonight if the Phillies offense starts to see him well the second time around the order. The Phillies rank in the top 10 in on-base percentage against left-handed pitching in August and right in the middle of the pack in strikeout rate. If the bottom of the order in Edmundo Sosa and rookie Johan Rojas can stay disciplined, this pick should have no problem covering for the 15th time in 24 games.

Jack Flaherty O/U 6.0 Strikeouts

Jack Flaherty was welcomed with open arms in Baltimore after a seven-year stint in St. Louis as a member of the Cardinals. Through two starts in Baltimore, Flaherty eclipsed this line in both starts, but those came against the Astros and Blue Jays, who rank in the top 15 in strikeout rate against righties since the All-Star Break. His opponent tonight, the San Diego Padres, are known to be stingy from the plate. They rank in the top 10 in strikeout rate to right-handed pitchers and walk at the 12th-highest rate in baseball.

Flaherty’s high walk percentage will be sure to lead to extended at-bats and plenty of full counts. He ranks in the 18th percentile in walk rate, and with patient hitters at the top of the lineup like Juan Soto and Ha-Seong Kim, Kikuchi may struggle with a rising pitch count.

Bryce Elder O/U 4.5 Strikeouts

The struggling New York Yankees have a great opportunity to jump at Bryce Elder and his poor advanced metrics tonight. He ranks in the 14th percentile in strikeout rate and has yet to find a putaway pitch to punch batters out. Aaron Judge and Jake Bauers offer great options at the top to either walk or build Elder’s pitch count up. Elder has struggled with his command as of late, as he’s walked at least two batters in seven of his last nine starts.

This pick has cashed in eight of the last 10 games that Elder has started in, and he’s even failed to reach the sixth inning in four of his last six starts.
