Self’s emphasis for Road America was about aero due to the long straightaways at Elkhart Lake. Considering this is the 750-horsepower package, it will further emphasize the top-tier drivers in top-tier equipment. Thus, as mentioned above, potential winners should come from just three camps: Hendrick, Penske, and Joe Gibbs.

On the other hand, there is a situation with two notable “road ringers” making spot starts this Sunday. Both Austin Cindric (+425) and A.J. Allmendinger (+300) are crossing over from the Xfinity ranks to compete in Sunday’s Cup race. Cindric will be driving the No. 33 for Roger Penske, while Allmendinger will be behind the wheel of the 16 for Kaulig Racing. Kaulig is working as a partner of Richard Childress Racing, so this isn’t like the glory days of road ringers when Boris Said or Scott Pruett would take someone’s lower to mid-tier ride and have no real shot at competing for a win.

Besides talent and equipment, Cindric and Allmendinger have one advantage that a majority of Sunday’s field doesn’t: Neither of these two has to sweat the Cup playoff picture. They can pit off sequence and set themselves up late for a victory. Plus, both are racing on Saturday, so they should have practice plus track time that nearly half of the field will not. While projecting wins for either driver is tough, they both should be in positions to finish at or above fifth come the checkered flag.
