The First Cut: Bermuda Championship PGA DFS Picks & Preview for DraftKings & FanDuel Fantasy Golf Lineups

The fall swing rolls on, and this week the PGA Tour heads to the island of Bermuda. Whenever the PGA Tour travels outside of the U.S., shot tracker does not follow, as was the case last week in Japan. This week at the Bermuda Championship there is no shot tracker yet again, but gamers will be able to see where golfers are on the course. There will be things like “Shot four from the primary rough,” but that is just a blip and should not deter from playing DFS golf this week. Even with all of that, decent prize pools await for the Bermuda Championship, so let’s break down the PGA DFS picks for DraftKings and FanDuel lineups.

Now in its third year, the Bermuda Championship has served as a pleasant stop on this fall swing. There will be 132 players on the island, with the top 65 and ties making the cut after 36 holes. The host course, Port Royal Golf Club, is a Robert Trent Jones design with plenty of links-style elements like small tight fairways and roughs that are difficult but short. The course clearly draws influence from venues in the United Kingdom.

One of the shortest courses on tour, coming in shy of 6,900 yards, the course butts up to the Atlantic Ocean, with plenty of holes offering views of the sea. The signature hole on the course is the 16th, a par 3 that bends around the cliffs that overhang the ocean. It provides some great visuals, but it is not all that pretty to the golfers if the wind is howling. Jones built the course was built back in the 1970s. It was turned over to the government and went through a massive renovation in 2009. In large part due to that renovation, the course held the PGA Grand Slam of Golf and now hosts this event each year.

Facts and Figures

  • Off the Tee: With past winners Brendon Todd and Brian Gay, length off the tee is not a needed asset. Neither is being accurate off the tee, as the average was well under 60% in each of the first two years.
  • Approach to the Green: Around 66% of the greens are hit in regulation here, which is around the average on the PGA Tour.
  • On and Around the Green: When the course is not hosting a PGA Tour event, it hosts plenty of guests and visitors. Thus the green complexes cannot be made all that difficult, or else no one would want to play outside of the PGA Tour. Scrambling and putting were both on the easier side the first two years.

Sweat Sheet

The seventh hole at Port Royal Golf Club is one of the most feel-good holes on the PGA Tour. With almost three times as many birdies as pars and 25 eagles, it accounts for nearly 20% of the total DFS scoring. The other par 5’s are also reachable, yielding at least another 20 eagles each year.

If a weak field with a cut and no-shot tracker is the preferred style of PGA DFS, then this week should be perfect. Matthew Fitzpatrick, fresh off his win at Valderrama a few weeks ago on the European Tour, is the highlight of the field. He and Patrick Reed are the only golfers ranked inside the top 30 here to compete. In fact, the top six golfers scheduled to compete this week have earned their keep on the European Tour, including Garrick Higgo and Christiaan Bezuidenhout.

With fairways being harder to hit, on average, there is not much that can be made or gained off the tee. A second shot and putters golf course, Gay and Todd both used their wizardry with the flat stick and strong iron play to earn victory on the island. As is typical with these shorter courses, it is about who can hit it closest and make the most putts. Wind plays a significant factor in the results and should be taken into account this week.
