Round 3 Showdown PGA DFS Picks: The Players Championship

Previous Round Recap

Scores in recent years had been much higher than what we’ve seen at TPC Sawgrass. On a beautiful March Thursday, it came back with a vengeance. The 17th hole provided fireworks yet again, including a heartbreaking 11 from Byeong-hun An and an eight from Kevin Na, who subsequently withdrew from the event. Yikes. The round didn’t finish due to the course’s harsher conditions; there are still a couple of golfers with first-round holes to play. That means we will very likely have a Saturday morning cut, setting up quite the drama.

Morning Wave:

From the jump, you could tell that TPC Sawgrass was going to lighten up a bit in terms of its difficulty, which threw a lot of people for a loop. The cut line, which was dead set on heading to two-over when the day started, ended up settling in at even-par, with a glimmer of hope for the one-overs, only for it die late in the day. Brian Harman backed up his impressive first round with another under-par day, but it was all eyes on Bryson DeChambeau, who looked like he didn’t even play all that well but still found himself with his second straight 69. Jon Rahm also made a big move up the board, the only one of his threesome to do so as both Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed lost ground — or didn’t gain any in Reed’s case.

Chris Kirk was one of 21 golfers that had to come back out and finish Round 1 on Friday morning and ended with three straight pars. That led him into his second round, where he had the round of the day, matching Sergio Garcia’s 65 in Round 1 with one of his own on Friday. Denny McCarthy also shot his second straight 69, with a ton of help from his ace on the Par-3 13th hole. Playing in the front of the green and it’s the shortest distance, McCarthy hit a full 8-iron that bounced perfectly and rolled into the cup. Charley Hoffman had the only other notable round from this wave, shooting 68.

Afternoon Wave:

Eight golfers are still on the course, as the easier conditions helped speed up play a bit. They will finish up at 7 a.m. EST, and with roughly three holes left for the last groups, the cut should be made around 7:45 a.m.

The talk of this wave, and frankly the tournament, is 47-year-old Lee Westwood, who isn’t taking any steps backward after last week’s runner-up finish. He leads country-mate Matthew Fitzpatrick by one, who also continues his good run of form. Sungjae Im was able to match Westwood’s 66 for the best score of this wave, while Paul Casey stayed dry on 17 and finished off his round, shooting 67. Doug Ghim also shot that number.

Quick-Hitter Round 2 Stat Recap

Doug was one of six players to gain strokes in all four categories in Round 2. The others were:

  • Lee Westwood (X2)
  • Sungjae Im
  • Doug Ghim
  • Charley Hoffman
  • Mark Hubbard (missed cut)
  • Pat Perez (missed cut)

General Strategy and The Players Championship PGA DFS Picks

It’s projected that 72 golfers will make the cut and would give us 36 twosomes, which should mean everyone will start off of the first tee tomorrow morning, with tee times starting around 9:00. I like the fact that everyone is starting on 1, or at least that’s what I presume to be the case, which should set up nicely for the golfers at 2- and 3-under to go out and shoot 65 or better and jolt up the leaderboard, putting pressure on the Westwood and Fitzpatrick.

PGA DFS Picks for Round 3 of The Players Championship

  • Bryson DeChambeau ($10,400) Everything looks to be in shape for Bryson, and with his capacity to up the drive a notch if he needs to, it’s an element that is tough to fade when the rest of his game is in form. He’s the most expensive golfer on the slate, but I think he presents the highest degree of safety in terms of getting five birdies and an eagle look or two.
  • Daniel Berger ($8,600) After struggling with the putter in Round 1, it woke up in Round 2 and quickly got him into the 60s. The other parts of his game are there and sits at a great spot for a low score on moving day.
  • Paul Casey ($7,600) A blunder on 17 yesterday is the only thing standing between him and the third Englishman in the Top-5. With 11 birdies in two days and a hot putter, Casey looks to continue his form into the weekend, and at an incredibly cheap price. Many will focus on Fitzpatrick and Westwood in this area, so his ownership should be that high quite yet.

Sneaky PGA DFS Pick for Round 3

  • Talor Gooch ($6,600) He’s in the picture again here at TPC Sawgrass, and seems to be quite comfortable on this difficult Dye track. At $6,6000, rostering him will allow you to get three golfers above $9K pretty comfortably, while still staying quite balanced.

DraftKings and FanDuel The Players Championship Lineup Fill-Ins

  • Jon Rahm ($10,000)
  • Jason Day ($8,100)
  • Sungjae Im ($8,200)
  • Si Woo Kim ($7,100)
