⛳ PGA DFS Picks: Genesis Invitational Round 2 Showdown Plays l Patrick Cantlay 2/19

This column is a quick-hitter article to give you the stats you need to make informed PGA DFS picks for your DraftKings and FanDuel daily fantasy golf lineups. We’re in search of a few recommendations for the third round of the Genesis Invitational. In a typical Showdown GPP, DraftKings will offer upwards of $50,000 to first place for second-and third-round tournaments and sometimes up to $100,000 for the final-round contests. They also provide weekend-long contests that have been offering $25,000 to first place on average. On top of that, FanDuel has tried to get into the weekend-long and final-round contests, offering $10,000 and $5,000 to first place in their PGA DFS Showdown contests. Let’s take a look at PGA DFS picks for Round 2 of the Genesis Invitational.

Round 2 PGA DFS Showdown Picks: Genesis Invitational

Previous Round Recap

Morning Wave

When a course provides so many great elements, we are set up for a great tournament. The stars of the morning show made an absolute mockery of the 10th, including Collin Morikawa, who made double. Matthew Fitzpatrick was able to tame the dragon that is Riviera, going out and shooting the best score in the morning, with a 66. Wyndham Clark managed to piece together a great round as well, the first of four golfers to post 67 from the morning wave. The other three were Joaquin Niemann, Patrick Cantlay and Matt Jones.

Don’t count out Dustin Johnson or Francesco Molinari, who both put together solid rounds, including bogey-free back nines. Johnson will be looking for his seventh straight top-10, while new resident and member of the club Molinari looks to continue his impressive West Coast swing.

Afternoon Wave

Another hometown boy, Max Homa, was the first to catch Fitzpatrick, but he ultimately couldn’t hold pace. Sam Burns, however, was able to catch and surpass Fitzpatrick, shooting the round of the day by 2 at 64. Incredibly, he actually didn’t gain through the bag either, slightly losing strokes off the tee while gaining a combined 7.44 with his putter and approach shots. I’m not sure that’s entirely sustainable, but he sets himself up nicely heading into Friday’s round.

A couple of other interesting names that played well in the afternoon wave include Scottie Scheffler, Tyler McCumber, Alex Noren and Jason Kokrak. All of them shot 4-under 67 and sit just 3 back of Burns.

General Strategy and Genesis Invitational PGA DFS Picks

Conditions in Round 2 should yield ideal scoring conditions, so it will just be man against course again. Weeks like this always provide incredible movement on the leaderboard, as the difficulty of the course keeps everyone close. One good round can put golfers back into contention, unless it’s Justin Thomas, who ended up shooting 77. He’ll need 65 tomorrow just to have a chance at playing the weekend.

Top-10

Both Cantlay and Homa, the hometown boys, will be popular as their form continues to simmer. Niemann is likely to get a bunch of interest as well, and with Clark coming in over 10% owned in the week-long slate, I suspect his ownership will be north of 20% tomorrow. Looking for some lower-owned options, Kokrak, Noren and McCumber could provide that. Scheffler seems like he’s in a good spot as well.

PGA DFS Picks Outside the Top 10

  • Dustin Johnson ($10,400): I’ll add in another pick, don’t worry, but with prices down for Showdown contests, it’s going to be hard for me to fade him. He’s much easier to fit in at these prices. Jon Rahm also played well but couldn’t make a putt when he needed to. He makes an intriguing against the play for Round 2 with all the focus going to Johnson and Cantlay.
  • Francesco Molinari ($6,900): A theme for me in these Showdown contests is to roster golfers that are gaining strokes throughout their whole bag, not just ones that are gaining it in one or two aspects. That way, if one falls apart, they have three other aspects that are in form to fall back on. Molinari is one of a few golfers outside of the top 10 that gained in all four aspects.
  • Talor Gooch  ($7,100): Gooch was the other golfer that was able to gain through the bag in Round 1 and carries a ton of momentum in Round 2. He got to 4 under at one point but bogeyed the second and the eighth hole to fall back to 3 under. I think he’s in a good spot for the second round and shouldn’t be too highly owned either.

Sneaky PGA DFS Pick for Round 2

Kevin Na ($7,800)

While typically golfers priced in the high $7,000s aren’t considered sleepers, I don’t imagine ownership to get above 5% here for tomorrow’s slate. But after a solid day of ball-striking, Na, who typically is one of the best putters on tour, didn’t get anything to go down today. That seems like a good opportunity to jump on him for tomorrow’s slate and hopefully catch the hot putter day.

DraftKings and FanDuel Genesis Invitational Lineup Fill-Ins

  • Jordan Spieth ($8,700)
  • Viktor Hovland ($9,100)
  • Lanto Griffin ($7,500)
  • Luke List ($7,100)
