Yahoo Fantasy has launched single-game contests for MLB. Every Friday, I am going to break down the featured matchup of the day and highlight some of the top MLB DFS picks in the contest. For tonight, the Blue Jays are taking on the Astros in a matchup of two offenses with plenty of firepower. The nine-run total in this game is tied for the highest of the night, so there are plenty of stud bats to roster. Yahoo Single-Game MEGASTAR Pick: Yordan Alvarez — $21
For those new to the Yahoo single-game format, two roster slots get multipliers. There is the MEGASTAR slot where the player earns 2x fantasy points and the SUPERSTAR slot where the player earns 1.5x fantasy points. For these positions, this article will focus on upside. The players rostered in these positions don’t have increased salary, so it makes the most sense to focus on hitters with power and home run upside.
With what that in mind, Alvarez is the top player to pay up for today. Yesterday he homered twice off of Gerrit Cole and scored 31 Yahoo fantasy points. When on the field, Alvarez is one of the best hitters in baseball. The only issue is that he isn’t on the field often enough. The good news is that this isn’t much of an issue for DFS and more of a year-long league issue. As long as Alvarez is in the lineup, he’s going to produce. Alvarez has opened the season with a 176 wRC+, which leads all qualified hitters on the Astros.
Yahoo Single-Game FLEX Pick: Alex Bregman — $13
Bregman isn’t having the greatest season by his standards, but this is because the bar is so high. Injuries and a shortened season last year limited him to just 42 games, but Bregman was an MVP candidate the season before. Opening the season with a 132 wRC+, Bregman is still one of the top-hitting third baseman in baseball, but he’s not playing at the MVP level he was a couple of years ago. With that said, he doesn’t have the salary of even an All-Star-caliber player. At just $13, Bregman is still on the cheap end of the salary spectrum, and there are only six players in this game averaging more Yahoo fantasy points than him.
Yahoo Single-Game Value Pick: Cavan Biggio — $8
Biggio is nearly at a minimum salary, which would have seemed crazy a year ago. After finishing 2020 with a 123 wRC+, Biggio looked one of the top up-and-coming second baseman in baseball. This season he has taken a step back. Biggio only has a 73 wRC+, and the biggest issue is that he’s struggling to make contact. His strikeout rate has swelled 31.4%, and his power has dropped off. On the positive side, yesterday showed a possible sign of a turning point. Biggio racked up three hits and 7.8 Yahoo fantasy points. He now has hits in three of his last four games, and he has only struck out once in the last three games. This is likely the last time Biggio can get rostered for such a cheap salary.
