In NBA DFS and daily fantasy basketball as a whole, it is not as simple as rostering the best play appears to be. Gamers have to consider the odds each player has of going off or busting. According to our tool, these are some of the NBA DFS picks on DraftKings and FanDuel that have the best NBA DFS projections of booming or busting.

NBA DraftKings + FanDuel Boom Candidates

Nikola Jokic vs. Rockets: $10,900/$11,400

29.3% DraftKings Boom/30.1% FanDuel Boom

The matchup for Nikola Jokic immediately looks good on paper, facing a poor Rockets team. It becomes even better since Christian Wood is not expecting to play, getting rid of their only somewhat feared presence down low. Jokic has had back-to-back poor games, and he is due for a big performance. If Will Barton is out for Denver, Jokic will be even more active as a distributor as well, so a triple-double is almost expected at this point.

Kelly Olynyk vs. Nuggets: $6,700/$5,000

22.9% DraftKings Boom/62.6% FanDuel Boom

Along with Wood out, John Wall is out for Houston as well. While Kelly Olynyk has been solid and aggressive on the offense end already, he is likely to take it up a notch tonight. He is coming off a 20-point double-double on 13 shot attempts. It wouldn’t be overly surprising to see him approach 20 shots today, especially if he can get matched up with Michael Porter Jr. at times.

Jae’Sean Tate vs. Nuggets: $6,100/$5,900

38.0% DraftKings Boom/54.5% FanDuel Boom

Jae’Sean Tate should also find possessions where he has MPJ defending him, and Tate can take advantage. Tate is a great NBA fantasy play because he does it all. He is capable of being aggressive on offense, shown by his 19 shot attempts two games ago. Tate also typically hangs in the 5-6 range for rebounds, but no Wood could mean that rises. No Wall also means Tate could step up as a distributor, though he already has 5+ assists in four of his past six games. Finally, he gets multiple steals constantly. With Denver’s backcourt running thin, there could be some careless possessions with the ball, leading to even more steals for Tate.

NBA DraftKings + FanDuel Bust Candidates

Luka Doncic vs. Lakers: $11,000/$11,500

66.6% DraftKings Bust/65.6% FanDuel Bust

Luka Doncic is great, but it takes a lot for him even to hit value today. With Anthony Davis possibly getting a couple of extra minutes today, the Lakers’ defense improves dramatically, and he could also slow down their pace. A slower pace means fewer possessions for Luka to stat pack. An improved defense, especially on Kristaps Porzingis, also means fewer assists for Luka. Porzingis is questionable to play as well, with an ankle injury bothering him. Could Luka hit value? Absolutely. Will he be a “boom” play? Unlikely.
