The Jock MKT Starter Kit: NBA DFS Picks and Strategy

How to Play

To begin, enter the NBA Daily Market when the Initial Public Offering (IPO) phase is under way. Leading up until the start of the first game, bid up on players you are interested in acquiring on the open market. Is there a player who you consider a favorite to finish at the top of the rankings? Invest as much or as little as you want in their fantasy performance, with shares beginning at $1 ranging all the way up to $25. See potential injury news that could open up opportunity for another player to acquire fantasy points? Make speculative bids for shares of the back-up, hoping for that news to break after the IPO phase is complete.

The next part of the game occurs during live trading. Buy and sell shares of players while the games are happening based on their production and where you could see them finishing amongst the field. Track as current points, projected points, and live price for each player is updated in real time, allowing you to track the action and invest in an instant to account for news. Trading can be done all the way up until the final buzzer of the night’s final game.

And the end of the games, each player share is paid out based on their final rankings of fantasy points amongst the field. If the shares you own are worth more than what you paid, you win money. It’s as simple as that! For more information, go to jockmkt.com.

Strategy Session

In run-of-the-mill DFS formats, there’s nothing you can do with the players you roster once their game starts. What’s amazing about Jock MKT, however, is the ability to capitalize on their fantasy performance before AND during play. While I still recommend investing roughly two-thirds of your play in the IPO phase, the option to buy-and-sell players based on what you’re watching is a huge edge. For example, if you own shares of a player who is playing over their head in the early minutes, simply lock in a profit by selling before their fantasy performance regresses. Similarly, if there’s a player that has a poor first half performance, buy-low on them in hopes of positive regression for the second half.

One other aspect of game play at Jock MKT I’ve enjoyed is trying to buy slightly higher on a player as soon as injury news breaks. That proved profitable with my investment in Jusuf Nurkic last night, who as soon as he was ruled in for that game, I had to have. Ranked at around a 30th projected finish due to injury concerns, I knew that was simply too low for him once he was good to go. So before the market could react, I was happy to pay the asking price to lock in my shares of him. He proceeded to finish 15th, locking a solid return on my investment.

But the most important thing you can do to be profitable at Jock MKT is keeping up with the news. Like in most fantasy formats, reacting quickly (and properly) to change can provide you with the biggest edge against fellow investors. While watching the game and understanding rotations might allow you to buy-low or sell-high on certain players, the big gains can be had by capitalizing on big news.

Investments for Tonight

  • Jae’Sean Tate — If the fact that this is my first investment recommendation ever makes you queasy, you’re not alone. The Rockets are severely short-handed in the aftermath of the James Harden trade, but now we’ve got an opportunity to invest in some Rockets on the open market and in NBA DFS. One I think there’s an especially solid opportunity to buy low on is Jae’Sean Tate, who despite being ranked slightly above teammates David Nwaba and Sterling Brown, will certainly come cheaper. Regardless of the game script, the rookie will be in store for 26-plus minutes with a possibility to see much more usage than his 18.6% season average. I plan on bidding $4 for a few shares, as I see upside for him easily surpassing his 32nd place breakeven point at that price.

  • DeMar DeRozan — The Spurs regain their star just in time to impose their will on this depleted Rockets team, they should be a force in NBA DFS. After being away from the team for personal reasons and nothing injury-related, I have no concerns about DeRozan immediately stepping in to his full run of minutes. That makes him a stronger fantasy asset than I believe the field does tonight. Looking at the current IPO suggest price of $7.09, I landed on $8.50 as my bid. I’m hoping to lock him in for less, but orders are filled based on how much you’re willing to bid for someone. If I can get DeRozan at a breakeven rank of 14th while being the 13th projected fantasy point scorer, that makes for a strong investment opportunity.
