My name is Chris Randone and If you ever watched The Bachelor or The Bachelorette, then you know getting a rose means everything. It symbolized the guy or girl giving them out likes you. Getting a rose means you survive to keep fighting for love. Well, in daily fantasy sports it’s no different. We go through a list of players deciding who will survive and make the cut into our lineups. These players fight to help us win. A true definition of love. I’ve learned being on the show that you never give out roses just for fun, there has to be a meaning behind it. We’ll take that same approach here. Tonight’s rose ceremony I’ll be given my Top Stack, Top Pitcher, Surprise Play, Surprise Stack, and Fade Play of this main slate.

Surprise Stack

Houston Astros, will you accept this rose?

Houston owns one of the lowest run implied totals (4.6) on tonight’s slate. However, rostering them tonight does provide some advantages. First, we’ll focus on the matchup. The Astros will face Kyle Hendricks, who has struggled on the road so far in 2019. He’s given up 18 earned runs with five HRs and 37 hits (.319). Houston ranks atop the league against RHP at home, 2nd in wRC+ (133), 3rd in wOBA (358), and are tied for 2nd in HRs (37). But it’s not just those numbers that stand out. Hendricks primary pitch is his sinker which he’s thrown 50.2% of the time this year. In 2019, Houston has produced these numbers against the sinker pitch:

Chrinos 9 for 14 (.657 wOBA)
Kemp 4 for 8 (.504 wOBA)
Bregman 11 for 24 (.463 wOBA)
Reddick 7 for 17 (.421 wOBA)
Stassi (.375 ISO)

Currently, Awesemo’s ownership projections have Houston owned in the low single digit percentile. Outside of Alex Bregman and Michael Brantley, the majority of Houston’s lineup is fairly cheap, giving you the ability for low price/high upside opportunity and provides salary relief for pitching/expensive bats.

Top Stack

Colorado Rockies, will you accept this rose?

When it comes to facing LHP at home this season, Colorado is amongst the best hitting teams in baseball versus left-handed pitching. The Rockies rank 1st in runs (49), 4th in wOBA (.373), 4th in AVG (.290), and 5th in BABIP (.337). Tonight they will face Diamondbacks ace Robbie Ray who has struggled pitching against Colorado as of late. I’m not one for batter vs. pitcher stats but Ray has been destroyed by the Rockies. Since 2016 he’s given up 60 hits, 37 runs, and 14 HRs to Colorado. Pitching in Coors won’t help Ray’s case. Colorado owns a 5.7 run implied total tonight. Outside of Story and Arenado, the Rockies will be somewhat owned which could make for an interesting play.

Top Pitcher

Blake Snell, will you accept this rose?

Blake Snell looks like his 2018 Cy Young self again with a 1.48 ERA over his last four starts. Snell’s 2019 K rate is greater than two full standard deviations compared to the league average. His 2.58 xFIP ranks one of the best in the league. Snell will face Toronto at home tonight where he’s 4-2 with a 2.63 ERA in his last nine games against the Jays, while Toronto is striking out 25.2% of the time against LHP this season which accounts for ninth worst in the league. Snell’s price tag isn’t cheap but it’s hard to look past the ace given his matchup and pitching at home.

Surprise Pitching Play

John Means, will you accept this rose?

John Means isn’t exactly a strikeout king, but his matchup and price gives me some interest tonight. Detroit is striking out 26% of the time against LHP this season, while Means has pitched decently at home — which is surprising given the huge ballpark downgrade. But in six games this season, Means has only given up two HRs with a 1.54 ERA. The Tigers don’t provide much power facing southpaws as they rank fourth worst in the league with six HRs on the road vs. LHP. Means is cheap and could be low priced SP2 on Draftkings if you’re looking for a cheap value play.
