Round 2 PGA DFS Picks: The PLAYERS Championship

Previous Round Recap

Scores in recent years had been much higher than what we’ve seen at TPC Sawgrass. On a beautiful March Thursday, it came back with a vengeance. The 17th hole provided fireworks yet again, including a heartbreaking 11 from An Byeong-hun and an eight from Kevin Na, who subsequently withdrew from the event. Yikes. The round didn’t finish due to the course’s harsher conditions; there are still a couple of golfers with first-round holes to play. That means we will very likely have a Saturday morning cut, setting up quite the drama.

Morning Wave:

Serio Garcia, coming into his 21st Players Championship, does have the most consistent record here at TPC Sawgrass via making the weekend in each of the last 8 trips. Today that consistency turned into star power again, racing ahead of the field, beating his wave by three shots. That included two eagles on the round, and he beat the average by just about nine strokes. Big names like Rory McIlroy, Tony Finau, Xander Schauffle, Tyrrell Hatton & more all shot 76 or above and are at least 10 strokes back of Garcia’s lead. Matthew Fitzpatrick & Corey Conners, however, continued their strong form from last week and shot the second-best score of the morning wave with a 68.

Afternoon Wave:

With Sergio setting the pace at 65, and three clear of the rest of the field, one had a feeling that number would stand through the day. It did, as Brian Harman gave it a good run, but ultimately fell two shots shy. Shane Lowry was the big surprise of the afternoon wave, coming into this week totally out of form. Although, a putter grip change for Lowry seemed to give him the confidence he’d been lacking, and it really showed out there today.

Quick Hitter Round 1 Stat Recap

Speaking of Lowry, not only did he putt well, but he also gained strokes in the other facets of his game as well. The others to do that in Round 1 were:

  • Lee Westwood
  • Bryson DeChambeau
  • Rory Sabbatini
  • Will Zalatoris
  • Gary Woodland
  • Jordan Spieth
  • Justin Thomas
  • Michael Thompson

General Strategy and The Players Championship PGA DFS Picks

Another perfect day in terms of the forecast, so not many external factors should come into play.

PGA DFS Picks for Round 2 of The Players Championship

  • Justin Thomas ($9,400) A difficult start to the round was mitigated by strong play through his bag, finishing the day under par. One of the few top 5 golfers in the world to do so, as many of the world’s best struggled in round one. Thomas’s play has been a roller coaster here, but he seems to have control of his game right now. With his ability to get hot with the irons, coupled with a hot putter, Thomas can move up the board quickly.
  • Collin Morikawa ($9,000) Another day and another three strokes gained with his approaches, adding another 1.43 off the tee. The short game deserted him, however, losing about the same amount he gained with his approaches on the day. But it was just two weeks ago that his putting stroke looked pure, and he made everything, so a good practice session tonight/tomorrow morning should help. It’s tough to fade anyone gaining 4.5 strokes ball striking in a round.
  • Jordan Spieth ($8,800) If you haven’t jumped on now, there’s still plenty of room on my bus. He could be my only saving grace this week, only 8% owned in the big mega Milly. A win might just get me to the cash line.

Sneaky PGA DFS Pick for Round 2

  • Gary Woodland ($6,600) We all know that Gary’s form is not reminiscent of his longer-term form, and it’s only a matter of time before it comes back. Maybe it’ll be this week, and his price remaining cheap allows me to stack all three of those guys above and still have plenty of salary left over.

DraftKings and FanDuel The Players Championship Lineup Fill-Ins

  • Bryson DeChambeau ($9,800)
  • Will Zalatoris ($7,900)
  • Matthew Fitzpatrick ($7,900)
  • Micheal Thompson ($6,400)
