MLB DFS Picks Tuesday 6/14: Spotlight Pitchers & Top Stacks Today

Tuesday, June 14, brings a loaded pitching slate with a plethora of options, as all 30 teams are in action starting at 7:05 p.m. ET. Let’s get into the top MLB DFS picks today for pitchers and stacks for DraftKings and FanDuel daily fantasy baseball lineups.

DraftKings & FanDuel MLB DFS Picks Today (6/14)

Top Stack: Braves at RHP Jackson Tetreault — 5.3 implied runs

It should be no surprise that the Stokastic Top Batters Tool is identifying Atlanta players in the top five at several positions today in their matchup against rookie Jackson Tetreault. Tetreault was called up to replace Stephen Strasburg, who is back on the injured list after just one appearance. He is 26 years old and was chosen in the seventh round of the 2017 MLB Draft, and since then he has slowly worked his way through each level of the minor league system. However, it has been a couple years since he has been listed among the top prospects for Washington.

Last night, Ozzie Albies fractured his left foot during an at-bat in the fifth inning, which is a blow to the Atlanta offense but should not dissuade anyone from targeting it in all formats tonight. Tetreault does not have a lot of strikeout upside, and he is susceptible to power. Matt Olson, Austin Riley and catcher William Contreras all rate out well at their positions, and, of course, Ronald Acuna Jr. and Marcell Ozuna are prime options in most matchups.

Evening Slate: Padres at RHP Kyle Hendricks — 5.6 implied runs

Tonight in Wrigley, the temperatures will be in the low-90s with 50% humidity and a 12 to 15 mph breeze out to left field. Kyle Hendricks is on the mound, and we will definitely want to have some San Diego stacks in tournaments. Over his last three starts, Hendricks has allowed five home runs and has struck out only five hitters. He has not been able to close out the sixth inning in 9 of his 11 starts, and the only redeeming metric in his favor is that he takes the mound every five days for the Cubs.

Lefties have pummeled Hendricks this season with a .295 ISO, which is even worse than his .224 ISO last season. Jake Cronenworth, Jurickson Profar and Eric Hosmer are the trio to target. Heck, this looks like a get right spot for Nomar Mazara and Trent Grisham as well. Manny Machado is in play any time he is in the lineup, and it is not hard to envision crooked numbers for the Padres tonight. The Stokastic Top Stacks Tool has identified the Friars as one of the best all-around options tonight with their mix of value and potential success at being a top stack. They will be popular, but with 29 other teams in the player pool, differentiation should not be too hard.

Late Slate: Giants vs. LHP Kris Bubic — 4.8 implied runs

Monday night saw the Giants plate six runners, though they only had three extra-base hits, so their stack was not particularly successful. Tonight we can go right back to them against Kris Bubic, as we should see the top half of their lineup swap last night’s lefties for some righties with a southpaw on the bump. This heavy platoon approach keeps the overall salaries suppressed, and it puts Austin Slater, Darrin Ruf, Wilmer Flores and Thairo Estrada firmly in play as a tremendous contrarian stack on the main slate and a nice pivot away from the Dodgers on the late slate.

Best MLB DFS Pitchers Today

Top Target: RHP Dylan Cease at Tigers — 3.2 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $8,800 | FanDuel $9,600

Across his last three starts, Dylan Cease has not allowed a single earned run. Though he failed to close out the fifth inning against both the Dodgers and Rays, he did throw 110 and 101 pitches. The main challenge was that he issued 10 walks, which, in turn, ran up his pitch count. That now means he has had multiple walks in all but one start this year and a whopping 33 in his 63 innings. Fortunately, he has racked up 89 strikeouts with only five home runs and 51 total hits allowed. This is something to file away for the next time he faces an above-average offense; however, he should have no trouble with Detroit.

This season, the Tigers have a league-worst 69 wRC+ against right-handed hurlers, which means they are scoring 31% less efficiently than league average. Their 24.4% strikeout rate is the fifth highest in the league, and it is accompanied by a dreadful .098 ISO. Enjoy!

Secondary Target: RHP Logan Webb vs. Royals — 3.2 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $9,100 | FanDuel $9,200

Despite seeing his strikeouts dip considerably from last year, Logan Webb is still having another solid campaign. While his velocity is similar to prior seasons, Webb is down to a career-low 36.8% fastball usage and career-high 31.4% sliders and 31.8% changeups, with the biggest shift being 8% of his fastballs becoming changeups. Given a career-best 2.13 walks per nine innings and his low 0.63 home runs per nine innings, it seems Webb just had an outlier year with his strikeouts last season. If he continues to keep his ground ball rate around 55%, he should be in line for a quality start more often than not. Kansas City has a mediocre offense, with today’s projected lineup collectively accumulating a 23.3% strikeout rate against right-handed hurlers over the last season and change.

Wild Card Target: RHP Logan Gilbert vs. Twins — 3.7 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $9,200 | FanDuel $10,200

It will be cool in Seattle tonight, which is a slight boost to pitching, with the temperature likely to slip below 60 degrees during the game. Logan Gilbert is having a terrific sophomore season, with his 2.41 ERA in the top 10 and his 1.08 WHIP ranked in the top 25 among all qualified starters. The 25-year-old righty has seen a slight dip in his strikeout rate, but he is still above average with nearly one per inning, and as an offset, he is averaging 97.8 pitches per appearance.

Minnesota has been a boom-or-bust offense, with a lot of its damage coming in bunches and against bad pitchers. In its last 13 games, it has had four or fewer runs seven times and six or more runs just four times. Byron Buxton, Carlos Correa and Max Kepler are a bit of a gauntlet, but they are not immune to good pitching and, believe it or not, Gilbert looks like the real deal.

Additional Opportunities

Shane Bieber should not be drawing any attention in the DFS world tonight, but he is interesting in the MLB player props market. Currently, he has a 6.5 over/under on his strikeout prop and the Stokastic MLB Projections have him for 5.5, giving him a 70% probability of staying under that benchmark. This game is in Coors Field, and for all their offensive woes, the projected Colorado lineup has a 19.8% strikeout rate against right-handed hurlers since the beginning of last year.

Other Pitching Options

  1. RHP Gerrit Cole vs. Tampa Bay Rays (Main)
  2. LHP Max Fried at Washington Nationals (Main)
  3. RHP Jose Urquidy at Texas Rangers (Evening)
  4. RHP Tyler Mahle at Arizona Diamondbacks (Late, Main SP2)
  5. RHP Tony Gonsolin vs. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (Late)

One-Off Hitters

  1. Xander Bogaerts vs. LHP Jared Koenig (Main)
  2. Jose Abreu at RHP Drew Hutchison (Main)
  3. Nick Castellanos vs. LHP Trevor Rogers (Main)
  4. Yordan Alvarez at RHP Dane Dunning (Main, Evening)
  5. Freddie Freeman vs. RHP Noah Syndergaard (Main, Late)

Final MLB DFS Thoughts & MLB Weather Notes

There are no precipitation issues of concern and most ballparks are getting warm weather, with a few even having 10 to 15 mph breezes towards the outfield fences. This should be a rollicking tournament slate!
