BYU vs. Gonzaga: OVER 162.5
This is a massive total, but it reminds me a lot of Gonzaga’s matchup against Iowa last month. While you maybe weren’t betting the under, many were afraid to pull the trigger on over 170. We wound up seeing the Bulldogs and Hawkeyes go for 187.
Gonzaga is just 6-4 to the over this season, and BYU is 5-5, so the numbers don’t point to this being as strong a play. But getting these two teams together on the floor should lead to a rapid pace like we saw with Iowa. Of course, BYU isn’t as talented as Iowa, hence the 17.5 spread rather than 4.5.
The numbers don’t tell the full story with the Cougars, who actually started the season 5-0 to the under. They’ve gone over in all five games since, scoring over 80 in three of their last four and exactly 87 points in consecutive games.
BYU probably doesn’t get to that mark in this contest, but just getting 70-75 on the board would be huge. We know Gonzaga can handle the rest if that’s the case. Gonzaga is coming off a season-low 85-point showing against San Francisco, and that’s a team that knows the matchup well and always tries to slow the game down.
Gonzaga has scored 95 or more points six times this season, which is actually their season average. This should be a pedal-to-the-metal contest the entire way, and BYU being a massive underdog likely leads to it pushing the pace the entire way through.
