2022 3M Open Predictions & Best Golf Betting Picks

In this new weekly article, Stokastic golf experts will give their favorite PGA betting picks, odds, and predictions of the week for the 2022 Open Championship.

Ben Rasa’s Pick: Cam Davis

Outright 25-1 (BetMGM)

The week after a major usually has a major reduction in field strength, and this week is no different. The top of the board is littered with non-winners and guys who do not have the resumes to usually back short odds. However, that gives guys like Cam Davis a real opportunity to get in the mix and possibly find another win on the PGA Tour. Davis scores in bunches and comes in off a top-10 at the John Deere where he gained 8.3 strokes tee to green. With another gettable course and a weak field, this is the type of spot where Davis thrives; he was my first click in the outright market this week.

Geoff Ulrich’s Pick: Matthias Schwab

Outright: +9500 (FanDuel Sportsbook) | Top 10 +950 (FanDuel Sportsbook)

I really like the idea of jumping on Matthias Schwab this week, who was trending as everyone’s favorite pick at the Barracuda (at 35-1 in the outright odds) before ejecting from the event with a terrible Friday round. This week we’re getting the classic overreaction situation, as Schwab is now available at near triple the price but going up against a very similar field. The Austrian has competed well at comparable PGA Tour setups to TPC Twin Cities, landing a 16th at the John Deere and a seventh at Puerto Rico earlier in the season. Prior to the Barracuda missed cut, he’d gained over 1.5 strokes on approach in each of his last two starts and has shown far better upside with his putter in 2022, gaining over three strokes against the field with that club three times over his last seven PGA starts. All of the hyped-up talent is priced at lower odds than usual, but Schwab offers big upside at a good price, making him one of my favorite bets to hop on this week.

Eytan Shander’s Pick: J.T. Poston

Outright: 40-1 (DraftKings Sportsbook) | Top 20: 18-1 (DraftKings Sportsbook)

This 40-1 shot in a field this devoid of top talent seems a little off for a guy who is on a serious roll — so long as it’s on American soil. J.T. Poston missed the cut at the Open, struggling to put together anything complete. However, the run he’s on in the states looks a little different, with four top-10s and a win at the John Deere. That’s going to be a major comparison, as much like that tournament, the 3M will put emphasis on creating birdie opportunities and bogey avoidance. Poston went wire to wire, winning by three strokes, and he once again rates high in the field in generating scoring opportunities. He’s top 10 in both bogey avoidance and birdies or better among this field, with a win already in similar high-scoring fashion. Maybe it was the jetlag or the sticky toffee pudding, but Poston’s poor performance in Scotland will prove to be an outlier this week.
