Expert PGA Golf Betting Picks: Farmers Insurance Open

In this weekly article, Awesemo’s golf experts will give their favorite PGA betting picks, odds and predictions of the week for the 2022 Farmers Insurance Open.

Ben Rasa’s Pick: Dustin Johnson

Outright: 22-1 (DraftKings)

The Farmers is loaded with top-end talent, which means reasonable prices on outright even for top end players. I looked very closely at Will Zalatoris at around 30-1 but settled on Dustin Johnson, who sits at an appealing 22-1 price in the market. Johnson is a prolific winner who can dismantle any field and has done so for a decade-plus on tour. His ball striking and putting both at times can be erratic, but synchronizing them means trouble for the rest of the field. Johnson has not played state side yet in 2022, which is the big mystery and why I like him more as an outright. The downside is a missed cut for a guy who may not in form, but that is more an issue on the DFS side of things. The win equity is there any time Johnson is in the field, and I will gladly add him to the betting card anytime he is in the 20s for an outright.

Geoff Ulrich’s Pick: Maverick McNealy 70-1

Outright: 70-1 (FanDuel) | Top 10: +350 (DraftKings)

Good West Coast form can often be a great indicator for Torrey Pines, and Maverick McNealy has both solid West Coast roots and recent form. He landed a runner-up finish earlier this year at the Fortinet Championship out in Napa Valley and grew up playing the biggest courses on this side of the country. He will be playing Torrey Pines for the third time as a pro this week and has the kind of progressive history we like to see at Torrey Pines, with 29th- and 15th-place finishes. McNealy has also found a new level of consistency of late, as he enters off having made 13 of his last 14 cuts and has gained over five strokes ball striking in his last two PGA starts. I expect him to win at some point on the PGA, as he has a great blend of power and higher-end putting. Given the venue in play and his recent form, 70-1 seems more than fair for an outright, but his top-10/20 odds are worth attacking too.

Jason Rouslin’s Pick: Brandt Snedeker

Outright: 110-1 (DraftKings)

Each Ways — Top 10: 8-1 | Top 20: 4-1 (DraftKings)

Snedeker is on a horrid two-year stretch: Since this event in 2020 he has not recorded a single top-10. A lot of that was due to his off-tee game, struggling to find the fairway and lacking distance. That is the worst combination a golfer can have on the PGA Tour. However, things are changing, as Snedeker has averaged over 85% of his fairways hit in the six measured rounds this calendar year. That is well above the tour’s average in the same events. That led to his best finish in over six months, with a tie for 14th at last week’s American Express, giving him the confidence he has not had since the third-place finish here two years ago. While beating the world’s best will be a tall task for the 41-year-old, his top-10 and top-20 numbers are both very appealing given his form and history.

Eric Lindquist’s Pick: Aaron Wise

Outright: 65-1 | Top 10: 11-1 (DraftKings)

This pick is as simple as this: If Wise has truly fixed his putting, now is the time to invest. The 2018 Rookie of the Year’s strengths as a golfer are his driving and chipping, an ideal duo when facing Torrey South. And now he has added a positive putter to the mix, with three consecutive weeks gaining strokes putting to close out the 2021 season. He grew up near Riverside, Calif., just up I-15, so he should have plenty of familiarity with the region and its poa greens. And while he has not gotten in the winner’s circle since 2018, the pedigree and ball striking are undeniable. In other words, do not be surprised if Wise with all the tools breaks out in his first event of 2022.
