DraftKings & FanDuel MLB DFS Picks Today (6/4)

Top Stack: Houston Astros at LHP Kris Bubic — 5.0 implied runs

There is some rain in the forecast, though it is highly unlikely to result in anything more than a delay unless a nimbostratus plants itself over the stadium for a significant length of time. Kris Bubic is simply not a major league caliber pitcher, though he is the projected starter and likely to be recalled from the minors. In his last 103 lefty-lefty matchups in The Show, he has been destroyed, allowing a .396 wOBA and a .356 ISO. Kyle Tucker and Yordan Alvarez crush same-handed hurlers and both are live in the home run props today. Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman and Yulieski Gurriel are also core plays. Lest we forget, Gurriel won the American League batting crown last season and yet still goes under the radar for DFS.

In the event that Bubic is not the starter or the weather risk ends up being higher than expected, there are plenty of other teams to pivot to this afternoon. The Cincinnati Reds get a nice matchup against RHP Erick Fedde in their tiny ballpark. Texas is hosting the Mariners, who will be trotting out LHP Marco Gonzales, which is a bonus for all the Ranger right-handed batsmen. Finally, the Guardians are in Baltimore against RHP Tyler Wells, who allows an abundance of contact with very few strikeouts.

Evening Slate: Philadelphia Phillies vs. RHP Michael Lorenzen — 4.3 implied runs

Gamers will naturally be looking at the Coors Field Extravaganza on the four-game evening slate and looking at the Awesemo Stack Tool, there is a leverage opportunity available by focusing on the Phillies. Right-hander Michael Lorenzen has struggled against lefties, ceding a .198 ISO in his last 153 opposite-handed matchups. Kyle Schwarber is back at the top of the batting order and has been absurdly good with a .293 ISO in his last 465 plate appearances against right-handed hurlers. Bryce Harper of course breaks all of the metrics by being yet another standard deviation above Schwarber. The reigning National League MVP has been otherworldly against righties with a .454 wOBA and a .368 ISO in his last 537 plate appearances. Rhys Hoskins and Nick Castellanos can be used to round out full-stacks to take advantage of the bullpen, which has seen significant work over the last 48 hours with the doubleheader in New York on Thursday.

Late Slate: Los Angeles Dodgers vs. LHP David Peterson — 5.0 implied runs

In his first three appearances this season, David Peterson was looking like he had figured out some things over the offseason, cruising through 14.0 innings with just one earned run, with 10 strikeouts allowing just one base runner per frame. In his last three starts, the regression has been swift over 15.2 innings with a disappointing eight walks and a 5.17 ERA. The May starts are more representative of his performance last year and likely a truer baseline. Going against the Dodgers tonight is likely to be a daunting task.

Peterson allows similar power to batters swinging the stick from both sides of the plate, which makes Freddie Freeman an outstanding selection as gamers are still hesitant to go with lefty-lefty matchups. In his last 283 appearances against fellow southpaws, Freeman has a lofty .356 wOBA and .198 ISO. Of course, the righties in blue are the core plays on all slates with Mookie Betts, Trea Turner, Will Smith and Justin Turner all popping in the Awesemo Top Batters Tool, Finally, with a lefty on the mound, Chris Taylor is likely to see a boost in the batting order and he has been locked in with multiple hits or a home run in each of his last three games.

Best MLB DFS Pitchers Today

Top Target: RHP Logan Webb at Miami Marlins — 3.3 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $8,500 | FanDuel $9,700

It looks like Logan Webb remembered where he misplaced his strikeouts as he has tallied six or more in four of his last five starts, culminating in a season-high 10 on Monday in Philadelphia. Miami has a pesky offense, but they are loaded with strikeout upside with only two regulars below league average in this key fantasy metric.

Secondary Target: LHP Aaron Ashby vs. San Diego Padres — 3.4 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $7,700 | FanDuel $8,200

Strikeout artist Aaron Ashby created a masterpiece against the Cubs on Monday with a dozen strikeouts. San Diego has been decent on offense considering they have been without Fernando Tatis Jr. but their projected lineup has four players who strike out at a 27% or higher clip against southpaws. If Ashby can navigate Manny Machado and Jurickson Profar at the top of the order, he could flirt with double-digit strikeouts for a second consecutive start.

Additional Opportunities

Walker Buehler is a pitcher we can roll with in our DFS lineups and also hedge some of his potential downside in the MLB player props market tonight. While he is a tremendous talent, he is also content to limit home runs, induce ground balls and let his defense do the heavy lifting behind him. Tonight, he has a 5.5 over/under on his strikeout prop and the Awesemo projections have him with just 4.8 against New York. That gives him a 68% probability of staying below this threshold. Buehler has more than six strikeouts in only three of his 10 starts and the Mets’ projected lineup has just an 18.9% whiff rate against righties since the beginning of last season.

Final MLB DFS Thoughts & MLB Weather Notes

The only weather to watch out for is in Kansas City and things look to clear up in the early evening, so if there is afternoon rain, it would not be difficult to push back the start time for this matchup.
