MLB DFS Picks Sunday 5/29: Spotlight Pitchers & Top Stacks Today

Sunday, May 29, rolls out an eight-game featured slate starting at 1:35 p.m. ET, along with a five-game afternoon slate with a first pitch of 4:07 p.m. Let’s get into the top MLB DFS picks today for pitchers and stacks for DraftKings and FanDuel daily fantasy baseball lineups.

DraftKings & FanDuel MLB DFS Picks Today (5/29)

Top MLB DFS Stack: Red Sox vs. LHP Bruce Zimmermann — 5.9 implied runs

The Red Sox stack is going to sneak up on exactly nobody today with their matchup against Bruce Zimmermann. In his last three starts, the 27-year-old southpaw has allowed seven home runs with only nine strikeouts. Including the doubleheader yesterday, the Baltimore bullpen has accounted for 259 pitches in the last 36 hours. Even when Zimmermann is knocked out of the game, there will be no cavalry coming over the rise to save the day.

J.D. Martinez and Xander Bogaerts did not start the second game of the doubleheader yesterday, so they should be fresh and ready to go today. Both excel against lefties, as do Enrique “Kike” Hernandez, Trevor Story and Bobby Dalbec. Using Dalbec and whoever is behind the dish at the bottom of the order is a good way to find differentiation and still have access to the fun.

Afternoon Slate: Twins vs. RHP Zack Greinke — 5.0 implied runs

This afternoon the Twins will be facing the venerable Zack Greinke, who has two K’s in his name and zero K’s in his game. OK, that is not entirely true, but he is averaging a career-low 4.3 strikeouts per nine innings. Somehow, he is still taking the mound every five days and doing his best to keep hitters off balance with his 88.6 mph fastball and 86.5 mph changeup. Hat tip to his 19-year career, but side with the Twins bats in this matchup.

Greinke has allowed more power to same-handed batsmen over the last two seasons, which bodes well for Byron Buxton, Carlos Correa and Gary Sanchez, who excel against fellow righties. Jorge Polanco can be included in the mix, as well as Trevor Larnach, who should be towards the middle of the order and is at a near-minimum salary across the board this afternoon.

Late Slate: Angels vs. RHP Jose Berrios — 4.5 implied runs

Sunday marks the 10th start of the season for Jose Berrios, who has been all over the map with his results. Across four outings this month he has recorded a 5.40 ERA with 30 baserunners. On a positive note, he has allowed only three home runs and issued four walks. The flipside is that two of every three outs this month have been fly balls. So far this season, the former Minnesota ace is notching just over two fewer punchouts per appearance than in either of the last two seasons.

Lefties are the source of the trouble for Berrios, as he has suffered a .214 ISO and 44.1% hard-hit rate against the last 442 opposite-handed hitters. Shohei Ohtani and Jared Walsh each have logged a wicked wRC+ of 145 since the start of last year. This means they are creating runs 45% more efficiently than the league average against right-handed hurlers. Mike Trout, Taylor Ward and whoever is the last man in for the outfield or infield are all in play on Sunday afternoon in this underrated matchup.

Best MLB DFS Pitchers Today

Top MLB DFS Target: RHP Corbin Burnes at Cardinals — 3.3 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $10,200 | FanDuel $10,200

Corbin Burnes is having another phenomenal season, and through nine starts most of his statistics are as good or better than his Cy Young-winning campaign. The only concerns are that he has already allowed one more home run than he ceded all of last season and his strikeouts are down a tick. However, we know that the ball has been tweaked yet again and there are now humidors employed at every ballpark in an effort to neutralize local weather conditions. Burnes has 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings, which are seventh best among all starters, so with everything relative he is still at the top of the list anytime he takes the field. If Burnes can successfully mitigate the efforts of Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado, he should be in line for a solid fantasy performance this afternoon.

Secondary MLB DFS Target: RHP Dylan Cease vs. Cubs — 3.4 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $9,800 | FanDuel $9,600

Today Dylan Cease is popping in the Awesemo fantasy projections with his matchup against the crosstown Cubs. Chicago’s National League team has the fifth-highest strikeout rate against right-handed hurlers this season at 24.9%, while their power numbers are in the bottom half of the league. Cease leads all qualified pitchers with 13.7 strikeouts per nine innings, and he should be a core building block in all formats today.

Afternoon MLB DFS Target: LHP Luis Garcia at Mariners — 3.7 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: DraftKings $8,700 | FanDuel $9,300

Somehow the Mariners have managed to outscore the Astros 12-1 through the first two games of their weekend series, including hanging a sixer on Justin Verlander with a whopping four home runs. This is being done with smoke and mirrors despite their 130 wRC+ against southpaws being the second best in the league this season. Last year this same group of batsmen had a 94 wRC+ against lefties, which means they were creating runs 6% less efficiently than league average and over one-third less efficiently compared to this season. Luis Garcia had just enough strikeout ability with the right mix of ground ball action to successfully navigate this matchup today.

Additional Opportunities

Jose Berrios is someone we can target in the MLB player props market today. Currently he has a 6.5 over/under for his strikeout total and the Awesemo projections have him for just 5.1, which means there is a 79% probability that he falls under his posted threshold. Berrios has notched more than five strikeouts in only two of his nine outings this season.

  2. Shane McClanahan vs. New York Yankees (Main)
  3. McKenzie Gore vs. Pittsburgh Pirates (Afternoon)

  5. Dane Dunning at Oakland Athletics (Afternoon)
