NBA DFS Picks: Sunday, Jan. 15

Core Play of the Day — Domantas Sabonis: Sacramento Kings-San Antonio Spurs

Domantas Sabonis has been a regular feature in this article series over the past several weeks. Sunday he draws top honors with a cherry matchup against the Spurs. Since we have been early to the party with Sabonis, it does not feel like we are chasing Friday’s amazing performance. In that outing against the Houston Rockets, Sabonis posted a triple-double with 19 points, 15 rebounds, 16 assists and four combined blocks and steals for over 70 fantasy points. Now that, of course, was a career performance, and we should not expect that again Sunday, however something in the mid-50s is very much in play.

San Antonio is just marking time this season and is embracing its rebuild. Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson and Tre Jones are the only players regularly approaching 30 minutes, and Vassell is out with an injury. Coach Gregg Popovich has been content to spread out the minutes as the Spurs look to see what they have talentwise on their roster. Defense has not been a priority, and over the past 15 games, San Antonio is allowing 120.6 points per 100 possessions, the worst defensive efficiency in the NBA during that span.

Kevin Huerter is questionable with a non-COVID related illness and missed the previous game. If he is out, then Malik Monk, Harrison Barnes and rookie Keegan Murray each would see a bump in his opportunities and become secondary options. Trey Lyles has been a big part of Sacramento’s three-game winning streak and is a solid option on DraftKings ($3,600), but he can be ignored on FanDuel ($5,000). De’Aaron Fox is always a tournament option, as well.

Philadelphia 76ers-Los Angeles Lakers

Joel Embiid (36), James Harden (38) and Tyrese Maxey (38) all played heavy minutes Saturday night when the 76ers won a tight one 118-117 at the Utah Jazz. Tobias Harris (knee) was out, and his status remains uncertain at this time. It would not be a shock to see one of the key players get a break, with Embiid and Maxey being the most likely candidates. Keep an eye on the injury reports to focus on any available 76ers in this matchup at Los Angeles.

LeBron James is a strong play, and he has taken the court just once in the past week, so he should be about as fresh as can be expected for a 38-year-old carrying a franchise by himself. Patrick Beverley (illness) has been ruled out, and Anthony Davis, Austin Reaves and Lonnie Walker IV continue to be sidelined with their respective injuries.

Russell Westbrook has been a fantasy gem off the bench, and with so many other players out, he can dominate the ball to his heart’s content when he is on the court without James. Kendrick Nunn should see 24-26 minutes and is one of the better value options on the slate with his eligibility at both guard positions.

Additional NBA DFS Building Blocks Picks – Sports Betting Opportunities

Josh Giddey is an intriguing option in the sports wagering market with an 8.5 total for his rebound prop for the Oklahoma City Thunder at the Brooklyn Nets. Giddey is averaging 8.0 rebounds per game this season and 12.2 per 36 minutes. Over his past three games, the 20-year-old Australian is averaging 33.4 minutes and 9.7 rebounds.

The NBA Bet Pro projections have Giddey for 9.5 rebounds and a 54% likelihood of surpassing his line of 8.5. Though this is a lower probability of success, this wager can be found for +107 on BetMGM, which gives it a solid 8% expected return on investment.

Dallas Mavericks-Portland Trail Blazers

On Saturday night, the Mavericks lost to the Portland Trail Blazers 136-119. Luka Doncic played 36 minutes and had a substandard performance. There is a chance he gets the night off, so monitor this situation. Christian Wood missed the game Saturday with a sprained ankle and is questionable, as is Tim Hardaway Jr., who tweaked his ankle. If Doncic and Wood are available, look their way in tournaments. If one or both are out, Spencer Dinwiddie would be elevated to core play status.

Jerami Grant (34) was the only Portland player to see more than 30 minutes, and most of the starters got the back half of the final quarter off as Dallas waved the white flag midway through by emptying the bench. Damian Lillard, Jusuf Nurkic and Anfernee Simons are the top options in all formats from the Blazers tonight. Josh Hart and Grant look good on the late slate and as main slate differentiation plays.
