The Jock MKT Starter Kit: NBA DFS Picks | Jan. 21
How to Play at Jock MKT
To begin, enter the NBA Daily Market when the Initial Public Offering (IPO) phase is under way. Leading up until the start of the first game, bid up on players you are interested in acquiring on the open market. Is there a player who you consider a favorite to finish at the top of the rankings? Invest as much or as little as you want in their fantasy performance, with shares beginning at $1 ranging all the way up to $25. See potential injury news that could open up opportunity for another player to acquire fantasy points? Make speculative bids for shares of the back-up, hoping for that news to break after the IPO phase is complete.
The next part of the game occurs during live trading. Buy and sell shares of players while the games are happening based on their production and where you could see them finishing amongst the field. Track as current points, projected points, and live price for each player is updated in real time, allowing you to track the action and invest in an instant to account for news. Trading can be done all the way up until the final buzzer of the night’s final game.
And the end of the games, each player share is paid out based on their final rankings of fantasy points amongst the field. If the shares you own are worth more than what you paid, you win money. It’s as simple as that! For more information, go to jockmkt.com.
Strategy Session — Use the Early Games to Inform Later Investments
Similar to other types of NBA DFS game play, getting ahead of news on Jock MKT is a huge edge. However, on a night like tonight, there doesn’t appear to be any major injury news on the horizon to take advantage of. That’s why I believe that while the IPO phase may still be inefficient on certain plays, a majority of the value that can be derived from the marketplace tonight takes place during the live trading hours. And while most might interpret that as simply reacting to the players who are playing well or terribly in that first game and bidding/selling on them, I believe snagging players in the late games based on who’s playing poorly is the most interesting avenue to explore.
Let’s dig into a hypothetical situation. With a 7:30 p.m. EST game followed by huge gap until the two 10 p.m. EST tip-offs, we’re most likely going to know how the trio of studs in the Lakers — Bucks game fair. If all three are smashing, I am much less likely to take shots to acquire Julius Randle or Stephen Curry, since there’s very little room for them to move up the leaderboard. But if I see any combination of them struggling in that early game, finding the most advantageously priced of the late-game studs could be packed with massive upside.
Similarly, if all three studs are going off in the early game, I’m much more inclined to take shots on the cheaper value, since they’re unaffected by ceiling performances they have no chance of reaching anyways. I’ll try and tweet out a take or two on who to target as the games are playing out tonight, so be sure to follow @EricLindquist (and definitely @jockmkt) on Twitter.
My Targets for Tonight
- Eric Bledsoe — Yeah, I have an Eric Bledsoe problem. The former Suns and Bucks guard landed into what I thought would be an ideal fantasy situation for him with the Pelicans, but that hasn’t come to fruition yet in this early season. I’m not giving up, though, and expect him to be a solid buy-low option on Jock MKT tonight. He’s still averaging high 20’s minutes on the season with upside for more as Lonzo Ball keeps working his way back from knee issues. And while his usage rate so far is the lowest it’s been since his rookie campaign (18.8%), he’s actually shooting the ball incredibly well with an effective field goal percentage of 54.3%. That’s nearly 4% above his career average, so should we see a game with a small spike in shot attempts tonight, I expect good things out of Bledsoe.
- Immanuel Quickley — With Alec Burks set to rejoin the rotation after a month absence, many will shy away from shares of the Knicks rookie guard. With a low pre-rank of 36th on Jock MKT and only 17.08 FPS projected, I don’t see many people having interest. But unless we hear otherwise, I expect Burks to be on a minutes limit against the Warriors tonight. With Austin Rivers also considered doubtful to play, there could be more opportunity for Quickley to see court time than others realize. He hovers right around a fantasy point per minute player, so any time in the 20’s could spike a large return on investment tonight.
- Anthony Davis — It looks as though Davis is the lowest-priced of the studs in the leadoff game, making him my clear-cut preferred option of the three. Considering missed shots count as -.5 fantasy points, paying up for a 53.2% shooter on the year secures the floor with him. He’s also a player with obvious upside to move up the leaderboard to the top spot should he hit his ceiling, making this a no-brainer if he keeps his place as the fifth-projected play of the slate.
