Steph Curry’s return to the Warriors will be a game he wants to forget. He led the way for Golden State, scoring 20 points on 7-of-21 shooting, while also dishing 10 assists in 30 minutes. It was nowhere near enough, as the Warriors lost by 26 points to the Nets. He did not get much help from his teammates. Kelly Oubre shot just 3-of-14, though most people only remember the sick put-back dunk he had in the game. Andrew Wiggins was the punchline to many jokes on Twitter, as he shot just 4-of-16 and turned the ball over four times.
Draymond Green was out, and he will be out yet again today, as he recovers from a foot injury. Rookie big man James Wiseman should see a slightly increased role as a result. While he did look like a rookie at times and he often got out of control, his skill was obvious. In 24 minutes, he scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds. He also drained his only three-point attempt. Wiseman’s role will continue to grow, and he could become a terrific complement to Curry’s perimeter game.
The Bucks also lost their season opener, with Giannis Antetokounmpo having the chance to tie the game with a free throw. He missed and Milwaukee lost, but there were positives. Let’s start with Brook Lopez. His stats won’t blow you away, as he scored seven points and grabbed three rebounds. However, he has a game-high +22 plus/minus. His replacement in the lineup, Bobby Portis, was -16. Khris Middleton also played well, putting up a line of 27 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists, which even topped Giannis’ line of 35 points, 13 rebounds and two assists. Finally, Jrue Holiday made his Bucks debut, and it’s clear he will fit in well. He scored 25 points in the game.
