PGA DFS: Showdown Spotlight for the Wyndham Championship Round 4 l Play for $100K

This column is a quick-hitter article to give you the stats you need to make informed PGA DFS picks for your DraftKings + FanDuel daily fantasy lineups and give you a couple of recommendations for the Wyndham Championship. On a typical showdown contest, DraftKings will offer upwards of $50,000 to first for rounds 2 and 3 showdown and sometimes up to $100,000 for the final-round contests. They also provide weekend-long contests that have been offering $25,000 to first for most weekends. Lastly, FanDuel has also tried to get into the weekend-long and final round contests, offering $10,000 and $5,000 to first.

Previous Round Commentary

The lowest scoring average of any Saturday we’ve seen in quite a while, as birdies and eagles were flying all over the place at Sedgefield today. A couple of names we haven’t heard in a while, or maybe at all, with Rob Oppenheim, Zach Johnson, & Jim Herman all going low today, with the latter two shooting 61, and Oppenheim 62. Russell Henley, Si Woo Kim & Doc Redman also burst out nicely, shooting 63. For Kim, he stays in the lead, while Redman gives himself a chance to win tomorrow.

Scoring was done on both sides, with 29’s being shot on both nines today. William Gordon & Mark Hubbard went six under on the back nine, while Zach Johnson did it on the front. I suspect we’ll get tougher pin conditions tomorrow, but the winning score should be will in the 20s.

The Expected Weather for Tomorrow’s PGA DFS Slate

It doesn’t look like there are any storms forecasted for tomorrow afternoon, so we should get an 845 am start with twosomes. No wind in the forecast either.

Previous Round Stat Review

I already stated that the scoring average was somewhere near 67—almost three under. There were a bunch of bogey-free rounds, streaks, and so much more.

Strokes Gained Ball Striking Round Differences:

Just when we thought Si Woo Kim couldn’t get stronger, he did in round three, gaining four more strokes ball-striking than in round two, including the hole in one.  He was the only one to gain more than three strokes from round to round, with Wesley Bryan, Russley Henley & Matthias Schwab all gained two more. Roger Sloan is the last one here in the top 5.

BOB Leaders In Round 3

  1. Kristoffer Ventura, Jim Herman & Zach Johnson (9)
  2. Rob Oppenheim, Doc Redman, Si Woo Kim, Peter Malnati, Ryan Armour (8)

Strokes Gained Ball Striking vs. Putting

I’m not sure if we could have foreseen a 61 coming from Zach Johnson, but he was the leader here in this category for the first three days. Now that mantle has been passed to Luke List, who still hasn’t found the putter, averaging a loss of about a stroke per round, but his ball-striking has been good averaging about two strokes per round, for a 3.38 difference. Ben Martin, Hank Lebioda, Josh Teater, & Chris Kirk round out the top 5 here.

Top 10 Breakdown and PGA DFS Pick(s)

General Strategy:

A constant reminder to all those playing finishing points is awarded to players on DraftKings for tomorrow’s slate.

Top 10 Breakdown:

Si Woo Kim has looked superb in all three rounds and holds a two-shot lead because of it. That’s not to take away from the play of Doc Redman, who’s gotten better each and every day of his tournament as well. A couple of studs sit outside of these guys, Billy Horschel, who had a terrible bogey on the second easiest hole all week today, and Webb Simpson, who missed a handful of putts inside of ten feet today or else he’d be right there. Zach Johnson’s ascent up the leaderboard today was real, going from just getting into the weekend to now inside the top 10! Peter Malnati also looks to buck his no top 10 trend, with a solid Sunday. First-round leader Harold Varner has yet to get it going the last two days, and sits six shots back, and will need another eight under or better to get his first PGA Tour win tomorrow.

Talor Gooch ($8,400) & Kevin Kisner ($9,100)

With a lackluster Saturday, mainly with his putter, Gooch shouldn’t be that highly owned especially given his price tag at 8400. Of course, I like Doc Redman a lot, but I sense he will be quite the obvious play tomorrow, so I’ll stick with Gooch as a lower owned play, in the top 10, and is hitting his irons very well this week.  This exact same boat goes for Kevin Kisner, who is at 9100. I’ll be starting my lineup with these two tomorrow.

Stud or Value Pick Outside of Top 10

Luke List ($7,800)

Having gained an average of 2.77 strokes tee to green through the first two rounds, List could be almost leading the tournament with those numbers. As has been the case with him throughout his career, his putter is failing him. If we get a hot Sunday with that club, though, List should be able to get inside the top 10 and continue his positive play since the return of play.

Sneaky PGA DFS Pick Outside of Top 10

Will Gordon ($6,800)

Even after his hot run on the back nine today, he missed a bunch of good birdie opportunities on the front side today. Maybe, that will keep his ownership low, and sitting just three shots outside of the top 10, Gordon should make for a low owned sneaky play for tomorrow’s slate. Salary savings will be clutch here as well, as we try and jam as many studs in as possible.

Lineup Fill-Ins

Joaquin Niemann ($7,900)

Josh Teater ($6,300)

Zach Johnson ($7,000)

Patrick Rodgers ($7,300)
