The last major of the 2022 season is here, and with it comes a ton of drama. The 150th British Open Championship is set to tee off from St. Andrews, which, of course, is on the short list of most famous venues in the world. For One and Done picks, it’s one of the biggest opportunities to launch up the leaderboard as the season starts to wind down. Depending on the standing and who is left, there are plenty of different directions to go this week, so let’s get into the best British Open One and Done picks.
PGA One and Done Picks: British Open Championship 2022
Scottish Open 2022 One and Done Recap
Xander Schauffele
The first guy in the article last week was Xander Schauffele, and he certainly delivered. Unfortunately, he was not available, but it was clear that the run of form with Schauffele gave him ample opportunity to contend in Scotland. He was able to continue the streak and add another win to the resume, which puts him strongly in contention to grab his first major this week. Those who had Schauffele available were rewarded with a big-time payday that most other people couldn’t obtain.
Ryan Fox
Ryan Fox was a popular name this week as a guy not seen a lot on the PGA Tour. He had a string of runner-up finishes heading into the Scottish Open and it was a chance to take someone who was clearly available late in the year. Fox excels in links-style courses but wasn’t able to make a splash last week, barely finding the cut line. The weekend didn’t provide much else, and the result was a subpar 47th-place finish. In the grand scheme of a One and Done season, that’s not a huge deal, but it certainly wasn’t what Fox backers were looking for.
Jordan Spieth
The pick last week was Jordan Spieth, who was one of the only elite golfers still available. He loves links golf, as he has an Open Championship on the resume and his short game allows him to work in and out of trouble. That all came out at the Scottish, as Spieth found himself in the hunt on Sunday, only to have some miserable mistakes on the greens take him out of contention. The 10th-place finish isn’t a bad one, but given the situation, he should have done more. He will be a volatile name at St. Andrews, but definitely one to consider.

2022 British Open Championship PGA One and Done Picks
Xander Schauffele
It doesn’t seem possible that Xander Schauffele would still be available, but if saving him for a major, this is the last shot. Anyone who does have him available should use him here, as there will not be a better spot and he can’t be popular due to it being this late in the season. His tee-to-green numbers are jumping off the page, and the wins at Travelers and the Scottish have him primed and ready. It’s not a matter of if he is a good One and Done play, it’s just the chances of having him still around are slim.
Cam Smith
In hindsight, Cam Smith should have been used earlier in the season, and he’s had some incredible stretches of golf. The game has regressed a little, but he still is a world-class iron player who can absolutely get crazy hot with the putter. He finished 10th last week at the Scottish Open, and his game looks to be in good shape heading into the Open. He won the Players Championship while losing strokes off the tee, and with some of these generous fairways, he could avoid a lot of trouble with even decent driving. If guys like Matthew Fitzpatrick or Patrick Cantlay are available, they are safer options, but Smith is still a comfortable play this week.
Thomas Pieters
It’s the Open Championship, so why not get a little crazy? This play is only for those far behind in pools that have to not only find a big showing, but also need it to be low owned. Thomas Pieters is a pure scorer who has all the talent in the world but rarely strings it together. He was runner-up at the BMW International and made the cut the last time out at the Irish Open. Avoiding the blow-up holes is the challenge, but of all the guys north of 100-1 in the outright market, Pieters has the best chance to contend.
2022 British Open Championship One and Done Pick: Cam Smith
Smith is one of the best players available and has the game for St. Andrews. He won the Players, was top five at the Masters and has shown the upside anytime the putter heats up. The irons are the strength of his game, and his ability to get up and down and avoid mistakes is perfectly suited for these conditions. Wind won’t bother him, and with the right situation, it’s not a stretch to think Smith breaks through for his first major win.
