Similar to last year I will be providing a review of one stack for the main slate as well as the viable sub-slates with at least two games on the docket. Some of these short-slate options will be good for the full-game set, others will be more contrarian and better suited for the mini-game sets.

Afternoon Slate MLB DFS Picks

San Diego Padres vs. RHP Luke Weaver – 6.6 implied runs

While Weaver has decent talent, he is coming off an elbow injury that shelved him for most of the 2019 season, and he has never topped 145 combined MiLB/MLB innings in a season. Additionally, we know that Arizona plans on spacing out his workload for this abbreviated season.

Three games into the season, we have already seen all 10 of the Diamondbacks relievers in action, and while they will have fresh arms available on Monday, there are not that many scary names in the bunch. This bodes well for the Padres.

On the afternoon slate, focus on Fernando Tatis Jr. Manny Machado and Tommy Pham who all have posted a .200+ ISO over the last two seasons. Eric Hosmer looks to have recovered from the stomach issue that kept him out on Saturday, as he took RHP Zac Gallen out of the yard on Sunday.

Main Slate MLB DFS Picks

Miami Marlins vs. RHP Asher Wojciechowski – 4.7 implied runs

The perils of writing an article 20+ hours in advance with an ever shifting set of unknown variables. This game has been cancelled after more than a dozen Marlins players and coaches have tested positive for Covid-19. The Philadelphia which hosted the Marlins this weekend have had their game against the New York Yankees has been cancelled for tonight as well.

Be sure to tune into the Deeper Dive and Live Before Lock tonight for all of the updated news.

There are better stacks with more power, but the price on the Marlins is going to help get us there. Over the last two seasons pitching in Camden Yards and the Great American Ballpark, Wojciechowski has allowed bombs at a lofty rate. The last 171 left-handed batters he has faced have tallied 2.33 HR/9. Same-handed batsmen have not been easy on him either with a 1.44 HR/9 rate.

Top priority will be Corey Dickerson and Jesus Aguilar, who both have a .220+ ISO against right-handed hurlers over the last two seasons. Jonathan Villar is not cheap, but he will be at the top of the order, and over the last three seasons, he has averaged 45.7 stolen bases and 16.3 home runs.

Keep an eye on the Marlins, who are staying in Philadelphia Sunday night while awaiting their current round of COVID-19 test results.

Houston Astros vs. RHP Kendall Graveman – 6.0 implied runs

A clean sweep with the Astros making this column all four days of their Mariners series. Graveman allowed a dismal 2.36 HR/9 in his 34.1 2018 innings prior to Tommy John surgery. It would seem he is best suited as an “opener” or long reliever, as he has never really exhibited much strikeout upside.

Once again we can focus on the top half of the Astros order. Depending on the Marlins’ health, discounted differentiation can be found with the bottom third of the Houston lineup.

Chicago Cubs at LHP Wade Miley – 4.8 implied runs

Public Service Announcement: In his last 49 starts, journeyman Wade Miley has allowed more than four runs in a game only twice. He made 16 starts in 2018 for Milwaukee and 33 starts last season for Houston. Just saying, those were not exactly pitching-friendly home parks. Current Cubs have managed just four home runs with a slash line of .254/.323/.415 in 158 plate appearances.

Anything goes in baseball, but this may not be the slam dunk spot it appears to be on the surface.
