Top Week 9 NFL DFS Stacks: Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers a Solid GPP Option

We’re into Week 9 of the NFL season now but there’s still a ton of parity around the league. Only one game on the entire main slate has a betting spread over 10.0 points (Bills -11.0 over Jets). Total-wise, there’s only three teams with implied team totals over 26.0 points and there is lots of mid-tier teams who could certainly pop-up in Week 9 and end the day as one of the top stacks for DFS. Teams like Tampa Bay, Green Bay and Detroit, all have been high-end fantasy purposes at some point over the last two season but at least two of them are trending with rather low sentiment.

It’s not a big shock who is sitting first in the Stokastic Top Stack Tool as the Bills are dominating the projections once again. However, the second and third place teams have solid projections of their own and much lower projected QB ownership. Let’s dive into the best NFL DFS stacks for Week 8 including Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals.

This article will use the Stokastic Top Stacks Tool to gain leverage on the field, either through ownership or by rostering the other side of the game on a popular stack. Here are some of the top opportunities for Week 9 below based on where they stand in Stokastic’s NFL DFS ownership projections.

Top Stack: Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals have now scored 68 points over their last two games. The offense has looked completed different with DeAndre Hopkins back in the lineup and it’s allowed other receiver options like Rondale Moore to come alive as well. Moore and Hopkins saw a combined 22 targets between them last week and Kyler Murray posted his best fantasy performance of the year, posting 29.64 DraftKings points in the loss to Minnesota. Murray has showed increased efficiency with Hopkins back as he completed over 70% of his passes last week, for just the second time this season, and also posted a 7.4 yards per completion rate, his best single game mark of the year by far.

This week, Arizona will face another team in Seattle who is likely to push Arizona into a pass heavy approach once again. Over the last three games, teams facing Seattle have thrown the ball 39.7 times per game on average as the Seahawks surprisingly efficient offense has been pushing teams into playing faster and going to a pass heavy approach earlier in games. Look at taking Tyler Lockett as a comeback play in this one, who posted 9 rec, 213 yards and two TDs in two games against Arizona last season.

This game has a close point spread and likely won’t carry gargantuan ownership given Arizona and Seattle played to a 19-9 game just a few weeks ago. Arizona’s offense has taken a massive step forward since then though and it’s worth noting that the last game between these teams played in Arizona saw Seattle win a 38-30 shootout. With the Cardinals ranking out a strong third in the Top Stack Tool on Stokastic this week — and suddenly having two elite WRs who are dominating the target share — they make for a great offense to stack around in Week 9.

Top Low-Owned Stack: Los Angeles Chargers

The offenses in the Chargers – Falcons match-up look to be in great spots this week. The Falcons have allowed 8.9 yards per pass attempt over their last three games, the second worst mark in the league. They’ll again be without one of their top corners in AJ Terrell and facing a Chargers offense who averages 44.0 pass attempts per game. Justin Herbert may be without both of his top WR options (both Mike Williams and Keenan Allen will miss this game) but that should only drive his ownership lower in a spot where we’ll be able to stack him with cheaper value options like Gerald Everett and Joshua Palmer. Herbert is coming in with half the ownership of Josh Allen this week in the projections but remains a high-upside play who has averaged 287 yards per game this year.

Palmer saw 12 targets in his last game without Keenan Allen in the lineup and now will have even less competition for targets with Mike Williams out. While there would be some legit arguments around fading a somewhat chalky Palmer as a WR1 — who will now be facing teams top cornerback options — Atlanta’s weakness on the corners makes this a great breakout spot for the second year WR. Everett is also in a great matchup as the Falcons have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points and second most receptions to the TE position this year.

While we’ll need to wait on Cordarrelle Patterson injury news to determine who the best Atlanta running back is to use as a comeback play in this game, the Chargers bottom ranked rush defense (5.7 yards per carry against) make this a great match-up to game stack. The lower-owned Herbert and his cheaper wide-outs have plenty of upside and should be pressured into a higher volume game by Atlanta’s persistent rushing attack.

Tournament Leverage Stack: Cincinnati Bengals

The Panthers are trending as a savvy, cheap DST target this week after the Bengals offense got absolutely trounced by the Browns in Week 8 on national television. Despite that poor game though Cincinnati is trending with the second-best top stack projection in the Stokastic Top Stack Tool for Week 9 and are generally an offense who we can look to to turn things around quickly. Joe Burrow has now averaged 337 yards over his last three games, while throwing for 8 TDs and 1 INT. The Panthers are also second last in sacks per game and don’t have a Myles Garrett-type dominator that the Bengals will have to worry about.

Burrow is also still averaging over 38.0 pass attempts per game and will have two elite WRs to throw to in Tyler Boyd and Tee Higgins. Boyd wasn’t able to follow up on his big Week 7 but gets a much easier match-up this week and will likely be extremely low-owned just based on his weak game against Cleveland. Carolina has allowed the 11th-most fantasy points per game to opposing WRs this year and did allow a long passing TD last week to the rush oriented Falcons.

The main appeal on using the Bengals here is getting leverage over what should be a very popular Panthers DST in lower stake GPPs. However, with good matchups for their remaining WRs and and what should be lower-ownership percentages across the board for their skill players they make for very appealing NFL DFS stacks in larger field GPPs for Week 9.
