Let’s dig into the player projections and popularity for DraftKings, FanDuel and Yahoo lineups, including Shohei Ohtani.
MLB DFS Picks: Spotlight Pitchers and Top Stacks
MLB DFS Picks: Spotlight Pitchers
Main Slate Primary Pitching Target: RHP Shohei Ohtani vs. Houston Astros — 3.8 implied runs
First Pitch: 9:38 p.m. ET
- DFS Salary: DraftKings $9,400 | FanDuel $9,300 | Yahoo $47
It’s never fun to fade the Houston Astros. Collectively they have produced only an 84 wRC+ against right-handed pitchers this year. But looking at the same group back to the beginning of last year, that combined figure leaps to a 110 wRC+, so caveat emptor.
There have been quite a few articles over the last couple of days speculating on the next contract for RHP Shohei Ohtani and which teams will be in the running for his services. There have been some interesting figures bandied about including high dollar shorter-term deals in the four-year range for $55-60 million per season and longer-term deals in the 10-12 year range that will eclipse $600 million.
Contract speculation has no bearing on today, other than to say that Ohtani is a superstar and is basically matchup-proof as both a pitcher and a hitter.
Main Slate Secondary Pitching Target: RHP Logan Webb vs. Washington Nationals — 3.4 implied runs
First Pitch: 9:45 p.m. ET
- DFS Salary: DraftKings $9,500 | FanDuel $10,500 | Yahoo $46
Last night, RHP Anthony DeSclafani was, unfortunately, rather hittable. The start was not as dire as it seems, however, as he logged seven innings. Still, he only managed only three strikeouts. Otherwise, of the 10 hits he allowed, only one went for extra bases.
We can go back to this matchup tonight as RHP Logan Webb is a full tier above DeSclafani. The main knock against Webb is that he has a subpar 21.9% strikeout rate across the last 965 batters to step in the box against him. The 26-year-old does a good job of limiting power with his 57.6% ground ball rate and nearly always closes out the sixth inning. Even considering the lack of strikeouts, he still has recorded six or more in five of his seven starts, including an eight-strikeout showing against the Mets and a 12-strikeout showing against the Yankees.
MLB DFS Picks: Top Stacks
Main Slate Target: New York Yankees vs. RHP Drew Rucinski — 5.1 implied runs
First Pitch: 7:05 p.m. ET
RHP Drew Rucinski had a rough season debut at the end of April against the Cincinnati Reds, and things went even worse last Thursday against the Mariners. In these two outings, Rucinski has surrendered a 7.71 ERA and 2.25 WHIP in just 9.1 innings pitched. These results should not be that surprising, considering the 34-year-old had three appearances this spring with Triple-A Las Vegas in which he allowed a 6.52 ERA and 1.76 WHIP in 9.2 innings pitches. It looks like he could end up back in the KBO sooner rather than later if he can’t turn things around soon.
Aaron Judge (hip) is on track to return to action tonight, which is a positive development for the Yankees, who are still without Giancarlo Stanton. New York plated seven runners last night, though most of the production came from the bottom third of the order, which meant most Bronx stacks were a bust.
We should go right back to Anthony Rizzo, DJ LeMaheiu, Gleyber Torres, Harrison Bader and young leadoff man Anthony Volpe tonight. The White Sox, Giants, Dodgers and Padres round out the top five most popular stacks, so it looks like things are somewhat disbursed for large-field tournaments.

Late Slate Target: San Francisco Giants vs. LHP Patrick Corbin — 5.2 implied runs
First Pitch: 9:45 p.m. ET
To LHP Patrick Corbin’s credit, he has lowered his 6.31 ERA from last year down to an almost palatable 5.17 ERA. Unfortunately for Nationals fans, he still has one more year after this on his six-year, $140 million deal with a whopping $35 million due next season in this backloaded contract. The 5.84 xERA does indicate this slight improvement could be an anomaly.
The Giants have a plethora of right-handed batsmen, and most should be in the lineup tonight. Thairo Estrada, Mitch Haniger, Wilmer Flores and Austin Slater all have a long track record of success against southpaws. J.D. Davis should be in the cleanup slot and he does profile well against Corbin’s offerings, though his consistency is somewhat lacking when compared to his counterparts.
Final Thoughts for Tuesday, May 9 | MLB DFS Picks
The Midwest has some rain that is likely to impact the games in Kansas City and Minnesota. Of course, the arrival time and potential coverage area will shape our decisions. We should have a better forecast picture
